Regina Mundi High School property was originally owned by Mr. Harry Robert Cumming and Mrs. Florence Cumming. The plot was inherited by their daughter and on in law, Mr. Val Oates and Mrs. May Cumming Oates. It was these who donated the farm to Bishop Alois Haene, then the Ordinary of Gwelo Diocese who started staying at the farm house on 8 November, 1955. The current convent is where the Bishop used to reside.
Regina Mundi is a Latin word meaning ”Queen of the world.” Regina Mundi was founded by the Dominican Sisters. Initially, Regina mundi Girls High School shared the same premises with the Dominican Convent junior School situated along 7th street Gwelo. During that time, the current junior school block, a three storey building for the high school along Kwekwe road was under construction.
The school relocated to where it is now on the 25th of January 1960. The Bishop relocated to St Pauls brothers house. Most of the construction works at the school block were completed except for the hall which had outstanding construction works. The first and second floor consisted of makeshift dormitories for students. The first floor had ablution blocks at the east and west ends. The Dominican Sisters who were running the school moved-in to stay in the former Bishop’s House.
The Queens hostel was under construction and the student moved-in in 1961. The pride in Regina Mundi’s tradition lay its moto ”Veritas”- Truth. The Girls viewed themselves as citizens of tomorrow so it was very important for them not only to seek and enquire into the truth, especially for the moral truths.
The school was dedicated to Mary Queen of the world. The feast of Regina Mundi queen of the world was first celebrated on the 31st of May 1960 in a ceremony and blessing by Fr. Monico. The blessing of the white statue of our lady mounted on a red pillar – a monument of purity and simplicity, was held on 16th May 1961 at 0530pm. Rev Fr Monico blessed the statue.
The AVM school bus was purchased the same year and it was used to ferry day scholars to and from school. Sr Emmaneul was the First Head of the school up to 1962. In 1963, Sr. Mary Aurea took over the button stick. The school closed down during the liberation struggle and reopened 1981.
In 1977, Sister Denis, who was the Headmistress of Loretto was called back to Germany and Mr. Alfred Simon Mlambo was transferred from Marist Nyanga to be the acting Head at Loreto. In November the same year, the freedom fighters called for a Pungwe at the graveside at Loreto where they announced that the mission was closed. The boarders and the sisters moved the following morning. Fortunately, this was after “O” Level examinations. Other schools such as Serima and Holy Cross were also closed. A meeting was held which resolved starting a refugee school in Gweru. St Micheals Church was offered to temporarily accommodate the displaced students. The school had two classes furnished with furniture which they had brought from Loretto. They had also taken along textbooks and came up with a library at the stage in the hall.
In 1979 they had their form one intake as they only had form twos and threes. By this time Mr. Mlambo lived in Kwekwe he drove to and from work every day. Fortunately, after 1980, he managed to get a house in Lundi Park. By then Regina Mundi High School was a primary school. The school was undergoing severe intake shortages since it was a multi-racial school. The parents with white children were moving their children to other schools due to Land Tenure Act. In 1981 the students moved from St Michaels church to the Regina Mundi multiracial Primary school. By the end of 1981, Regina Mundi High School was officially opened. It was already competing with former group “A” schools such as Thornhill and Chaplin. During this time only girls were boarders and boys were day scholars. The reason why the school preferred girls in boarding was to raise the status of the girl child who was disadvantaged for a quite long time. Also, the only hostel at the school, Queens, Could only accommodate girls. The boys were transported by the ZUPCO to and from school. The boarding kitchen was simply a small cottage constructed with asbestos.
Sr Theresa Camillo and Mr. Urayayi from Mukaro, Together with Mr. Mlambo team from St Michaels formed the staff with Mr.Mlambo heading the school and deputized by Sr Camllo. The late Sr Sabina (R.I .P) and Mr. Muchimwe were in the Kitchen and Agriculture Department Respectively. The original Logo for the School was VERITAS which was the loge for all the Dominican schools but Mr. Mlambo and his team changed it to Mens Sana in Corpore Sano (A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body). This idea was a clear spearhead by Mr. Mlambo who had an inclination in sport. While students were expected to excel in academics, he also encouraged them to put their weight on sporting activities for healthy mind and body. Mr.Mlambo headed the school from 1981-1987. Mr. Mlambo worked tirelessly for the establishment of the school.
Sr Theresa Camillo took over and headed the school from 1988-2002. This saw school improving its pass rate drastically. It was during Sr.Theresa Camillo’s tenure of office that the school uniform was changed from the former Loreto school uniform of a maroon skirts, beige blouse and a bottle green cardigan and a blazer to the current plum pinafore, beige blouse and plum cardigan and blazer. The boys were putting on grey trousers. There were also a lot of infrastructural developments such as construction of the dining hall, church Jordan Mai and Holy Trinity Hostel and A’ Level school block. All this good work was crown by the construction of the church so that students would not to have a disco in the hall in the evening and mass in the morning at the same place. Sr Rubaya took the chair from Sr Camillo and in 2004 the school was accorded its 1st Secretary’s Bell Merit Award. Since then, the school has moved from strength. Sr Rubaya was head of the school from 2002-2007. Sr Rubaya saw to the completion of the church and purchase of an Isuzzu truck for the school and the Marcopolo bus. Sr Rubaya handed over the button stick to Sr Jangara, then to Mrs Maphosa who is currently at the helm of the school.
